What does this type of asbestos insulation look like?
This type of asbestos has many different appearances but is mostly a fibrous material which flakes and powders easily.
When applied to pipes it is often covered in a protective coating (or painted) which can be any colour, and may make it more difficult to identify.

How dangerous is Asbestos Lagging and Insulation ?
This is one of the most dangerous materials containing asbestos.
There is an extremely high risk from breathing in fibres because disturbance of the lagging or insulation releases fibres very easily in to the air that you breathe.
Asbestos fibres are at their most dangerous when they are airborne and therefore can be breathed in. If you find or suspect you have found lagged pipes or heating installations. Leaving the insulation undisturbed until we can survey and test samples greatly reduces the risk of exposure.
This type of asbestos material must be notified to the HSE upon its detection and handled / removed only by fully licensed HSE contractors, of which we are and have been for one 35 years.
