Where do you find Asbestos Insulating Board (AIB)?

Asbestos Insulating Board is also known as AIB and it is a highly dangerous form of asbestos.

Asbestos Insulating Board was commonly used as fireproofing material but it had many other uses such as:

  • Partition walls
  • Fireproofing panels in fire doors
  • Lift shaft linings
  • Ceiling tiles
  • Soffits
  • Panels below

What does Asbestos Insulating Board look like?

It looks like normal building items such as wall panels boards, ceiling tiles and plasterboard.

It is difficult to tell the difference between asbestos insulating board items and non-asbestos materials.

How dangerous is it?

Work on AIB is dangerous. Asbestos insulating board easily releases fibres in to the air when disturbed.

Asbestos fibres are at their most dangerous when they are airborne and therefore can be breathed in. If you find or suspect you have found asbestos insulation board. Leaving it undisturbed until we can survey and test samples greatly reduces the risk of exposure.

This type of asbestos material must be notified to the HSE upon its detection and handled / removed only by fully trained and licensed HSE contractors, of which we are and have been for one 35 years.
